Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with your SIMS, Bromcom, or Arbor experience — the advert lists this as a hard requirement and it will be the first filter applied.

2

📊 Quantify your reception workload: e.g. "Managed front-of-house reception handling 80+ daily visitor sign-ins and 50+ phone enquiries across a 600-pupil secondary school."

3

🎯 Include a dedicated 'Safeguarding' line in your skills section referencing any safeguarding awareness training completed, as the advert explicitly asks for this knowledge.

4

🏫 If you have prior school or educational setting experience, place it at the top of your work history with the school name, pupil numbers, and MIS system used — the advert flags this as desirable.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage several urgent tasks simultaneously at a busy reception desk. How did you prioritise?

Situation: During a parents' evening at a 650-pupil secondary school, I was the sole receptionist managing walk-in visitors, a ringing phone, and an urgent email from the headteacher — all at the same time. Task: I needed to ensure no visitor was left unattended, no call went unanswered, and the head's email was actioned within 10 minutes. Action: I greeted the visitor, asked them to sign in via the SIMS kiosk, placed the incoming call on a brief hold with a polite explanation, and forwarded the head's email to the deputy with a flagged note. Result: All three tasks were resolved within 8 minutes, the visitor was seated on time, and the head confirmed the email was actioned correctly. No complaints were raised.
2Question

Tell me about a time you identified a safeguarding concern. What steps did you take?

Situation: While logging a late arrival at reception, a Year 9 pupil appeared visibly distressed and disclosed that they had not eaten since the previous morning. Task: As the first point of contact, I needed to respond calmly without alarming the pupil while following the school's safeguarding protocol. Action: I asked the pupil to take a seat, offered a glass of water, and immediately contacted the designated safeguarding lead via the internal phone. I completed a written record in SIMS within 15 minutes, noting the exact time, the pupil's words, and my observations. Result: The DSL conducted a welfare check the same morning, a referral was made to the pastoral team, and the pupil received free school meal support within 48 hours.
