STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult parent or visitor in a school setting

During my previous role, an angry parent arrived demanding immediate access to their child's records after a disciplinary incident. I remained calm and professional, explaining our data protection procedures whilst acknowledging their concerns. I arranged for the deputy head to meet with them within 30 minutes, provided a private meeting room, and ensured all relevant documentation was prepared beforehand. The parent left satisfied with the resolution, and the deputy head commended my handling of the situation, noting how my approach prevented escalation whilst maintaining school protocols.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to prioritise multiple urgent administrative tasks

During a particularly busy Monday morning, I faced three urgent tasks: processing absence notifications for 45 students, preparing visitor badges for a school inspection team, and updating pupil records following weekend admissions. I prioritised the inspection preparations first as this affected the entire school's reputation, then quickly processed the absence data to ensure accurate registration figures, and finally updated the new pupil records during my lunch break. All tasks were completed on time, and the inspection team praised our efficient visitor management system.
