STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news to parents about their child's needs

During a statutory assessment, I discovered a 9-year-old had significant learning difficulties requiring specialist provision. The parents initially believed mainstream school with support would suffice. I arranged a face-to-face meeting, presenting assessment findings clearly with visual aids showing their child's cognitive profile. I explained how specialist provision would better meet their needs, providing examples of successful outcomes. I also connected them with parent support groups and arranged a school visit. The parents appreciated the honest, supportive approach and agreed to the specialist placement, which resulted in significant academic and social progress over the following term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently without direct supervision

Working as a locum across 4 different local authorities, I managed a caseload of 22 assessments independently over 3 months. I established clear communication protocols with each authority, created my own tracking system for statutory deadlines, and scheduled regular check-ins with SENCOs. When complex cases arose, I proactively sought consultation from senior colleagues via professional networks. I completed all assessments within statutory timescales, with 95% of reports accepted without amendments. This experience demonstrated my ability to maintain professional standards whilst working autonomously across different systems and requirements.
