STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a challenging case where you helped a student overcome significant barriers

I worked with a 14-year-old student with severe anxiety who had been out of school for 8 months. The situation required immediate intervention as the family was considering home education. I conducted a comprehensive assessment over 3 sessions, identifying specific triggers and developing a phased return plan. I collaborated with the school's SENCO to implement gradual exposure therapy and environmental adjustments. Within 6 weeks, the student was attending 4 days per week with 85% attendance maintained over the following term. The key was building trust through consistent communication and involving the student in every decision about their support plan.
2Question

How do you manage your workload when working flexibly across multiple clients?

I use a digital scheduling system to track assessment deadlines across 4 different local authorities, ensuring I never exceed the 20-week statutory timeline. Each Monday, I review my pipeline of 12-15 ongoing cases and prioritise based on urgency and geographical efficiency. I block specific days for report writing and maintain a buffer of 2 weeks for unexpected urgent referrals. This system allowed me to complete 89 assessments last year while maintaining quality standards. I also set clear boundaries with clients about availability and response times, which prevents overcommitment and ensures sustainable working practices.
