STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news to parents about their child's assessment

A 9-year-old student I assessed showed significant learning difficulties that would require specialist provision. The parents had high academic expectations and were initially resistant to the findings. I arranged a face-to-face meeting and used visual aids to explain the assessment results, focusing on the child's strengths alongside areas of need. I provided concrete examples of how specialist support would benefit their child's development. By the end of our 90-minute discussion, the parents understood the recommendations and agreed to the proposed educational plan. The child subsequently thrived in their new placement, achieving personal targets within 6 months.
2Question

How do you manage your workload when working on multiple assessments simultaneously?

When managing 8 concurrent assessments last term, I created a detailed tracking system using Excel to monitor each case's progress against statutory deadlines. I scheduled school visits in geographical clusters to maximise efficiency and blocked specific days for report writing. I maintained regular communication with schools about timelines and sent weekly progress updates to the local authority. This systematic approach ensured all 8 assessments were completed within the 20-week statutory timeframe, with 7 delivered 2 weeks early. The structured system reduced my stress levels and improved the quality of my reports.
