STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safety hazard on site. What did you do?

Situation: On a residential groundworks project in Bristol, I noticed exposed rebar protruding from a freshly poured concrete slab near a pedestrian walkway. Task: As the nearest operative, it was my responsibility to prevent injury before the site manager could be reached. Action: I immediately cordoned off the area using barrier tape from the site store, placed two hazard cones, and radioed the site supervisor to report the issue. I also flagged it in the site diary. Result: The rebar was capped within 20 minutes. The site manager commended the quick response, and the incident was recorded as a near-miss rather than an injury — contributing to the project maintaining its zero-injury record for that quarter.
2Question

Tell me about a time you had to work in physically demanding conditions — how did you manage your energy and focus throughout the day?

Situation: During a summer groundworks contract in Somerset, temperatures reached 32°C and I was tasked with manual excavation alongside a two-person team for 9-hour shifts. Task: I needed to maintain output without compromising safety or quality. Action: I structured my hydration breaks every 45 minutes, rotated the heaviest digging tasks with my colleagues every 90 minutes to prevent fatigue, and flagged to the supervisor when I felt the pace was creating risk. Result: Our team completed 60 metres of trench over 4 days — on schedule — with no heat-related incidents reported, and the supervisor noted our approach in the weekly site briefing as best practice.
