STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell us about a time you dealt with challenging behaviour in your classroom

Situation: I had a Year 4 pupil who frequently disrupted lessons by calling out and refusing to follow instructions. Task: I needed to address this behaviour whilst maintaining a positive learning environment for the other 29 pupils. Action: I implemented a personalised behaviour chart with clear expectations and rewards, had a private conversation with the pupil to understand underlying issues, and worked with parents to ensure consistency. I also provided additional one-to-one support during independent work time. Result: Within 3 weeks, disruptive incidents reduced by 80% and the pupil began participating positively in group activities, improving their academic progress significantly.
2Question

How do you handle the pressure of planning and marking workload?

Situation: During my first term teaching Year 5, I struggled to balance detailed lesson planning with thorough marking for 32 pupils across all subjects. Task: I needed to maintain high-quality teaching whilst managing my workload effectively. Action: I created a structured weekly planning schedule, used peer marking for certain activities, developed marking codes for efficient feedback, and collaborated with colleagues to share resources. I also prioritised key assessments and used verbal feedback during lessons. Result: I reduced my evening marking time by 6 hours per week whilst maintaining detailed progress tracking, and my lesson quality improved due to better-structured planning time.
