1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your teaching approach for a struggling pupil

During my Year 2 placement, I noticed one student consistently struggling with phonics despite whole-class teaching. I identified through assessment that he was a visual learner who needed multi-sensory approaches. I created personalised phonics cards with pictures and actions, and arranged 15-minute daily interventions. I also collaborated with his parents to use the same techniques at home. After 6 weeks, his phonics screening score improved from 18 to 34 out of 40, and his confidence in reading aloud increased dramatically. This experience taught me the importance of individualised assessment and flexible teaching strategies.
2Question

Describe a situation where you worked effectively with support staff

In my Year 5 class, I worked with a teaching assistant to support 3 children with varying SEN needs during mathematics lessons. We planned weekly meetings to discuss individual targets and strategies. I focused on whole-class teaching while she provided targeted support using visual aids and manipulatives we designed together. We created a communication system using hand signals so she could indicate when students needed additional help without disrupting the lesson. This partnership resulted in all 3 SEN students achieving their individual maths targets, and 2 exceeded expected progress. The collaboration strengthened both our professional development and student outcomes.
