STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you inspired a reluctant learner in your classroom

I had a Year 5 pupil who struggled with mathematics and had become disengaged. I identified that he was passionate about football, so I created a series of lessons using football statistics and match scenarios to teach fractions and percentages. Within 3 weeks, his test scores improved from 45% to 78%, and he began volunteering answers in class. By the end of term, he had caught up with his peers and maintained his enthusiasm for maths. This experience reinforced my belief in connecting curriculum content to children's interests to unlock their potential.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your teaching approach mid-lesson

During a Year 4 science lesson on states of matter, I realised 12 pupils were struggling with the abstract concepts despite my planned demonstration. I quickly shifted to a hands-on approach, dividing the class into groups to conduct ice melting experiments using classroom resources. I provided differentiated worksheets on the spot and moved between groups offering targeted support. The lesson outcome improved dramatically - 89% of pupils could explain the concept by lesson end compared to the initial 34% understanding. This taught me the importance of reading the room and having flexible backup strategies ready.
