STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed challenging behaviour in your classroom

Situation: I had a Year 5 pupil who frequently disrupted lessons by calling out and refusing to follow instructions. Task: I needed to address this behaviour while maintaining a positive learning environment for the other 29 pupils. Action: I implemented a behaviour chart system with clear expectations, provided the pupil with specific roles like distributing resources, and arranged regular check-ins with parents. I also worked with the SENCO to identify underlying needs. Result: Within 6 weeks, disruptive incidents reduced by 80%, and the pupil became a positive role model, even helping other children with their work.
2Question

Describe how you build positive relationships with parents and colleagues

Situation: As an ECT, I needed to establish trust with parents and integrate effectively with my new teaching team. Task: I wanted to create open communication channels and demonstrate my commitment to pupil progress. Action: I introduced myself to all parents during the first week, sent weekly class newsletters highlighting achievements, and scheduled regular informal chats with colleagues during breaks. I also volunteered to support the Year 4 sports day organisation. Result: Parent feedback was 95% positive at the first parents' evening, and I was invited to join the school's curriculum development working group within my first term.
