Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with a specific sales achievement (e.g. 'exceeded depot targets by 22%') — the advert explicitly prioritises results-driven candidates who hit KPIs.

2

📊 Quantify every sales result: 'Grew account base by 15 trade clients in 6 months, increasing repeat order value by £8,000 per quarter' to mirror the advert's focus on targets and profit.

3

🎯 Mention any CAD software experience (e.g. Winner Design, ArtiCAD, Fusion 360) in your skills section even if basic — the advert lists CAD as preferred and Howdens will build on it via their Ready to Trade Programme.

4

🚗 Confirm your full UK driving licence and vehicle access explicitly in your CV header or profile — the advert lists this as a firm requirement for conducting home visits.

5

🤝 Include a bullet under each relevant role demonstrating trade or B2B relationship management, referencing the type of customer (builders, contractors, developers) to align with Howdens' 460,000 trade professional customer base.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target — what actions did you take and what was the outcome?

Situation: In my previous role at a building materials supplier, our depot was 12% below its quarterly revenue target with six weeks remaining. Task: As the senior sales contact for trade accounts, I was asked to identify and close the gap. Action: I reviewed my 30 active trade accounts, identified 8 contractors who had reduced order frequency, and personally visited each one to understand their pipeline. I presented tailored product bundles at negotiated rates that suited upcoming projects. I also ran a short promotional campaign for new kitchen specifications. Result: Over the final six weeks, I brought in £47,000 in incremental orders, finishing the quarter 4% above target and retaining all 8 at-risk accounts into the following period.
2Question

Give an example of when you had to negotiate a price confidently while protecting your company's margin.

Situation: A long-standing trade contractor requested a 20% discount on a full kitchen fit-out order worth £14,000, threatening to go to a competitor. Task: I needed to retain the order without eroding margin below our 30% floor. Action: I reviewed the specification and identified two premium appliance upgrades the client had included that were negotiable. I offered a 9% discount on the core cabinetry — staying above margin threshold — and substituted one appliance for an equivalent model at lower cost to us, presenting this as an added value package. Result: The client accepted, the order was placed at £12,800 with a 31% margin intact, and the contractor placed two further orders within the next eight weeks.
