Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with sales target achievement — the advert explicitly prioritises "results driven" candidates who have hit KPIs; cite a specific target you met or exceeded.

2

📊 Quantify your sales impact: e.g. "Consistently exceeded monthly sales targets by 18%, generating £320k revenue across 12 months" to stand out in a depot environment.

3

🎯 Mention any experience conducting home visits, surveys or client consultations — the advert lists this as a core duty and it differentiates trade-facing candidates.

4

🛠️ If you have CAD or kitchen design software experience (even basic), name the tool explicitly (e.g. Winner Design, Fusion, AutoCAD) — the advert lists CAD as preferred and training is provided, so any prior exposure is a bonus.

5

🤝 Highlight relationship-building with trade professionals (builders, contractors, developers) — Howdens serves 460,000 trade customers, so B2B or trade-facing sales experience is directly relevant and should appear in your work history bullets.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target — what approach did you take and what was the outcome?

Situation: In my previous role at a builders' merchant, our depot was 12% behind its quarterly revenue target with six weeks remaining. Task: As the lead sales contact for trade accounts, I was asked to identify quick-win opportunities to close the gap. Action: I contacted 28 dormant trade accounts by phone, offered tailored product bundles based on their previous order history, and arranged three on-site visits to present new product ranges. I also upsold accessories to 15 active accounts. Result: We closed the quarter 8% above target, generating an additional £47k in revenue. Two of the reactivated accounts became top-10 spenders the following quarter.
2Question

Describe a situation where a customer was unhappy mid-project. How did you resolve it and retain the relationship?

Situation: A building contractor discovered that a kitchen unit specified in the original design was discontinued after installation had begun on site. Task: I needed to resolve the product gap quickly without delaying the client's handover date, which was three weeks away. Action: I sourced a compatible alternative unit from a different range, visited the site to confirm dimensions, and arranged priority delivery within 48 hours. I also applied a 7% goodwill discount on the replacement order and kept the contractor updated daily. Result: The installation was completed on schedule, the contractor expressed satisfaction in a written review, and they placed two further kitchen orders worth £18,500 within the next two months.
