Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with a specific sales achievement (e.g. "Exceeded quarterly targets by 22%") — the advert explicitly demands results-driven candidates with KPI experience.

2

📊 Quantify your sales track record throughout your CV: "Grew account base by 35 trade clients over 6 months" rather than listing duties, as the role centres on depot target delivery.

3

🎯 Mention any CAD or design software experience (even basic) near the top of your skills section — the advert lists CAD as preferred, and it signals you'll reach productivity faster on the Ready to Trade Programme.

4

🚗 Confirm your full UK driving licence and vehicle access explicitly in your CV header or profile — the advert flags home visits as a core duty and lists this as a firm requirement.

5

🤝 Include a bullet for each role demonstrating relationship management with trade professionals, contractors, or B2B clients — Howdens' 460,000 trade customer base means this is central to the position.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target under pressure — what did you do differently to achieve it?

Situation: In Q3 at my previous employer, our depot was 22% behind its quarterly revenue target with six weeks remaining after two colleagues left. Task: As the remaining senior sales advisor, I needed to close the gap without additional headcount. Action: I restructured my daily schedule to prioritise callbacks on 30 warm trade accounts, introduced a follow-up call within 24 hours of every home visit, and worked with the depot manager to offer a time-limited bundle promotion on worktops. I also identified three dormant accounts and reactivated them with tailored design proposals. Result: We finished the quarter 4% above target, generating an additional £38,000 in revenue compared to the same period the previous year.
2Question

Give an example of when you had to negotiate on price while protecting your company's margin — what was the outcome?

Situation: A long-standing trade customer requested a 15% discount on a £14,000 kitchen order, threatening to take the project to a competitor. Task: I needed to retain the sale without breaching our minimum margin threshold of 28%. Action: Rather than discounting the headline price, I reviewed the specification with the customer and identified two premium upgrades they had included out of habit rather than necessity. I proposed swapping these for mid-range alternatives, saving £1,800 on cost, and offered a modest 5% loyalty discount on the remaining balance. I also highlighted our two-week lead time versus the competitor's six-week wait. Result: The customer accepted the revised proposal, we retained a 31% margin, and they placed a second order for a bathroom project the following month worth £4,200.
