Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with measurable sales achievements — the advert explicitly requires experience of reaching sales targets and KPIs, so open with a headline figure such as '£X revenue generated' or 'consistently exceeded targets by X%'.

2

📊 Quantify every sales role: write bullets like 'Grew account base by 22 trade clients in 6 months, contributing £85k in incremental depot revenue' to directly mirror the depot-target language in the advert.

3

🎯 Mention any kitchen, interiors, or home-improvement sales context prominently — Howdens serves trade professionals, so sector-adjacent experience (bathrooms, flooring, furniture) is a strong differentiator worth naming in your skills section.

4

🚗 Confirm your full UK Driving Licence in your personal details or skills section, as the advert lists it as a hard requirement for conducting home visits.

5

🖥️ If you have any CAD or room-planning software experience (even free tools like IKEA Home Planner or RoomSketcher), list it explicitly — the advert notes CAD is preferred, and naming a tool shows initiative before the Ready to Trade training begins.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target — what specific actions did you take to get there?

Situation: In my previous role at a flooring showroom, our depot was 18% behind the quarterly revenue target with six weeks remaining. Task: As the senior sales consultant, I took ownership of closing the gap without additional headcount. Action: I reviewed my existing quote pipeline and identified 14 outstanding proposals that had gone quiet. I personally called each trade customer, offered a site visit to resolve any outstanding queries, and tailored revised quotes to their project timelines. I also introduced a weekly follow-up tracker shared with the depot manager. Result: We converted 9 of those 14 quotes, generating £47,000 in additional revenue and finishing the quarter at 104% of target — the depot's strongest quarter in 18 months.
2Question

Give an example of when you had to negotiate a price under pressure while maintaining the integrity of the sale.

Situation: A trade customer requested a 15% discount on a full kitchen fit-out worth £12,500, threatening to go to a competitor if we didn't match their quote. Task: I needed to retain the sale without eroding margin below the depot's floor threshold. Action: Rather than discounting the headline price, I reviewed the specification and identified two premium accessories the customer had included by default. I proposed swapping these for mid-range alternatives, saving £900, and offered an extended payment schedule across two invoices. I clearly explained the quality difference so the customer felt informed rather than downgraded. Result: The customer accepted the revised proposal, we retained the full margin on core cabinetry, and they placed a second order for a bathroom vanity unit three months later.
