Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your HGV Class 2 licence and Driver CPC prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Certifications' section — the advert lists both as hard requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 15-20 multi-drop stops per shift across Cardiff and South Wales, maintaining 98% on-time delivery rate.'

3

🌐 Highlight any temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food delivery experience explicitly, as the advert flags this as a preferred differentiator for Booker's wholesale routes.

4

🎯 Mention handball and manual handling experience directly — the advert stresses physical demands including working outdoors in adverse weather, so demonstrating this reduces employer risk.

5

🤝 Reference flexibility and short-notice availability in your personal statement, as the advert specifically states routes vary daily and short-notice changes are required.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler makes this HGV Class 2 Driver position at the Cardiff Retail Partner site a natural next step for me. Holding a valid Class 2 licence and Driver CPC, I have hands-on experience completing multi-drop routes and managing handball deliveries safely and efficiently across varied daily schedules.

My background in food distribution logistics has equipped me with a strong understanding of temperature-controlled load management and pre-drive vehicle safety checks. I am comfortable working 48-hour weeks with short-notice route changes, having regularly adapted to last-minute schedule adjustments while maintaining on-time delivery performance across 15 or more drops per shift.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a last-minute change in your delivery schedule.

Situation: Midway through a 17-drop route delivering chilled goods across Cardiff, I received a call informing me that two delivery addresses had changed and a third had been added. Task: I needed to re-sequence my remaining stops to maintain cold chain integrity and still finish within my driving hours. Action: I pulled over safely, used my route planning app to recalculate the order, informed my depot controller of the revised ETA, and contacted the new delivery point to confirm access arrangements. Result: I completed all 18 drops on time, with no temperature exceedances recorded and positive feedback from the added retailer on my communication.
2Question

Give an example of when you worked safely in challenging weather or physical conditions.

Situation: During a winter shift, I was tasked with completing 14 handball deliveries in heavy rain and near-freezing temperatures, including two sites with uneven loading bays. Task: My priority was to complete all deliveries without injury or vehicle incident. Action: I wore full PPE including non-slip boots, reduced my manual handling load per trip to 20kg to maintain control on wet surfaces, and used wheel chocks at each stop. I also reported the hazardous bay conditions to my depot at the end of the shift. Result: All 14 deliveries were completed safely, and the depot used my report to raise a formal site safety review with two of the retailers.
