Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ List your HGV Class 2 licence and Driver CPC card prominently in a 'Licences & Certifications' section at the top of your CV — the advert lists both as mandatory requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your multi-drop experience: e.g. 'Completed 18–25 drops per shift across a 120-mile radius, maintaining 98% on-time delivery rate'.

3

🌐 Highlight any experience with temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food deliveries, as the advert flags this as a preferred background for Booker's retail partner routes.

4

🎯 Mention your availability and flexibility explicitly — the advert stresses routes vary daily and short-notice changes are required; a line such as 'Available 48 hrs/week including short-notice schedule changes' signals a direct match.

5

🤝 Include a brief note on customer-facing delivery experience, as the role involves direct interaction with independent retailers' store staff during handball deliveries.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's Wellingborough Retail Partner operation is exactly the kind of multi-drop, customer-facing environment where I thrive — which is why the HGV Class 2 Driver vacancy caught my attention immediately. I hold a valid Class 2 licence and current Driver CPC card, and I have hands-on experience completing high-volume multi-drop routes including handball deliveries at independent retail sites.

My background in food and wholesale distribution has equipped me with a strong understanding of temperature-controlled vehicle protocols, tachograph compliance, and the physical demands of handball deliveries in varied weather conditions. I am comfortable with daily route variation and short-notice schedule changes, consistently maintaining on-time delivery performance across busy shift patterns of up to 48 hours per week.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a last-minute change in your delivery schedule — how did you manage it?

Situation: Midway through a 22-drop shift, our depot called to say a major road closure had blocked three of my planned routes into central retail sites. Task: I needed to resequence the remaining 14 drops and still meet the agreed delivery windows for all accounts. Action: I pulled over safely, contacted the transport office, and together we rerouted using live traffic data. I reprioritised time-sensitive chilled deliveries first and notified two retailers of a 30-minute delay. Result: All 22 deliveries were completed within the shift window, with only two drops arriving slightly late — both retailers had been pre-warned and confirmed no operational impact.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer at a delivery point. What happened and how did you resolve it?

Situation: On arrival at an independent convenience store, the owner refused to accept three pallets of ambient stock, claiming the order was incorrect. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute professionally without delaying the remaining 18 drops on my route. Action: I checked the delivery note against the manifest, confirmed the order matched what had been placed, and calmly walked the owner through each line item. I then called the depot to arrange a callback from the account manager for any pricing query. Result: The owner accepted the delivery in full. The account manager followed up the same day, and the customer left positive feedback with the depot about how the situation was handled.
