Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your HGV Class 2 licence and Driver CPC card prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Qualifications' section, as these are explicitly listed as mandatory requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 12-15 multi-drop deliveries per shift across 60-mile radius, maintaining 98% on-time delivery rate.'

3

🌐 Highlight any experience with temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food deliveries, as the advert flags this as a preferred background for the Booker wholesale operation.

4

🎯 Mention handball and physical delivery experience explicitly — the advert stresses this is a physically demanding role involving manual work in adverse weather, so demonstrating prior experience reduces perceived risk for the hiring manager.

5

🤝 Reference your availability and flexibility for varied daily routes and short-notice schedule changes, as the advert specifically calls out the need for flexibility in hours, including at short notice.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker Wholesale's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler makes this HGV Class 2 Driver position in Exeter exactly the kind of role I have been looking for. I hold a current Class 2 licence and a valid Driver CPC card, and I bring hands-on experience of multi-drop delivery routes including handball at customer premises — precisely the physically demanding work your Booker Retail Partner site requires.

My background in food distribution has included temperature-controlled deliveries across varied daily routes, managing tachograph compliance and conducting thorough pre-drive vehicle checks on every shift. I am comfortable working 48-hour weeks and adapting to short-notice schedule changes, having regularly covered flexible routes for independent retail and catering customers.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a last-minute change in your delivery schedule.

Situation: Midway through a 13-drop route delivering chilled goods for a food wholesaler, I received a call that a key customer's loading bay was closed due to a forklift breakdown. Task: I needed to reorder my remaining 8 drops to keep all deliveries within their agreed time windows without breaching my drivers' hours. Action: I pulled over safely, contacted the depot controller, rerouted to complete the other 7 drops first, and arranged a revised 2-hour window with the affected customer. I updated my tachograph records accordingly. Result: All 13 deliveries were completed on time, the affected customer received their chilled stock within the agreed window, and I returned to depot with zero compliance issues.
2Question

Describe a time you had to deliver excellent customer service to a retailer or business customer during a challenging delivery.

Situation: During a winter morning shift, I arrived at a small independent convenience store to find the owner short-staffed and unable to assist with unloading a 40-case ambient delivery. Task: My schedule allowed 20 minutes at that drop, but leaving the stock undelivered would have caused a stock-out for the retailer's busiest trading day. Action: I completed the handball of all 40 cases myself, stacking them safely in the store's back room and labelling the chilled items clearly for the owner to refrigerate. I still departed within 25 minutes. Result: The retailer called the depot to commend the service, and I completed the remaining 9 drops on schedule with no late deliveries recorded.
