3

🌐 Highlight any experience with temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food deliveries, as the advert flags this as preferred — even if from a previous employer.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler — serving over 190 cash and carry branches — is exactly the environment where I want to apply my HGV Class 2 driving skills. Having held a valid Class 2 licence and Driver CPC, I have hands-on experience completing multi-drop delivery routes, including handball at delivery points and maintaining safe handling of temperature-controlled goods.

My background in distribution logistics has equipped me with a strong understanding of pre-departure vehicle checks, tachograph compliance, and adapting to variable daily routes at short notice. I am physically fit, comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, and available for a 48-hour working week including flexible shift patterns.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your route or schedule at short notice — how did you manage it?

Situation: During a busy Monday morning shift at a regional food distributor, I was informed 30 minutes into my route that two delivery addresses had changed due to a last-minute store relocation. Task: I needed to re-sequence 16 remaining drops to avoid late deliveries and keep the vehicle loaded efficiently. Action: I contacted the depot controller, updated my route using the onboard sat-nav, and reprioritised the two new addresses to fit logically within my existing sequence. I also notified the affected retailers by phone so they could adjust their receiving staff. Result: All 16 deliveries were completed within the original time window, with no customer complaints and full tachograph compliance maintained throughout.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult customer at a delivery point. What did you do?

Situation: At a convenience store delivery, the owner refused to accept three pallets of chilled goods, claiming the order was incorrect, despite the manifest confirming it was accurate. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute professionally without delaying the remaining 14 drops on my route. Action: I calmly showed the store owner the signed delivery manifest and cross-referenced the product codes against his original order on the paperwork. I called the depot's customer service team who confirmed the order was correct and spoke directly with the retailer. Result: The retailer accepted the delivery after the call, and I completed the rest of my route on time. The depot team followed up with a courtesy call, and the retailer raised no further complaints.
