Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler — serving over 190 cash-and-carry branches — is precisely why this HGV Class 1 Driver role at the Cardiff Retail Partner site appeals to me. Holding a valid Class 1 licence and current Driver CPC, I have built solid experience in multi-drop delivery environments, including temperature-controlled food logistics, and understand the physical demands of handball work across varied delivery points.

My background in commercial transport has equipped me with a strong grasp of tachograph compliance, pre-departure vehicle checks, and adapting to daily route changes at short notice. I consistently prioritise safe, on-time delivery while maintaining a professional standard of service with trade customers — skills directly aligned with Booker's independent retailer network.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your route or schedule at short notice — how did you manage it?

Situation: During a busy Tuesday morning at my previous haulage role, a road closure on the A48 blocked my planned route to three Cardiff retailers, with no advance warning. Task: I needed to complete all 10 drops by 14:00 to avoid impacting store opening stock. Action: I immediately contacted the transport office, rerouted using my knowledge of alternative roads, and contacted two retailers to adjust their delivery windows by 30 minutes. I also reprioritised the load sequence to hit the furthest drop first. Result: All 10 deliveries were completed by 13:45, with no customer complaints raised and the transport manager commending my proactive communication on the day.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer during a delivery. What did you do?

Situation: At a wholesale delivery to an independent convenience store in Newport, the store owner disputed three cases of chilled product, claiming they were short-dated and unusable. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute on the doorstep without delaying the remaining seven drops on my route. Action: I checked the delivery manifest and product date codes on the spot, confirmed two of the three cases were within specification, and agreed to return the one genuinely short-dated case for credit. I logged the return accurately on the handheld device and called the depot to raise the credit immediately. Result: The customer accepted the resolution, signed off the delivery, and the credit was processed the same day — retaining the account with no escalation.
