STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to solve a maintenance problem with limited resources

Situation: Our main heating system failed during winter with no immediate contractor availability. Task: I needed to maintain comfortable working conditions for 45 staff members. Action: I sourced 6 portable heaters from local suppliers, strategically positioned them in key work areas, and created a rotation schedule to maximise coverage while monitoring electrical load capacity. I also identified and temporarily sealed 3 drafty windows using materials from our maintenance stock. Result: Maintained average office temperature of 18°C for 4 days until contractors arrived, with zero complaints from staff and no disruption to business operations.
2Question

Give an example of when your attention to detail prevented a potential safety issue

Situation: During routine legionella testing, I noticed water temperature readings were 2°C lower than previous month at one outlet. Task: I needed to investigate this anomaly as it could indicate system compromise. Action: I cross-referenced the readings with maintenance logs and discovered a recent thermostat adjustment hadn't been properly documented. I immediately tested surrounding outlets, found similar temperature drops, and escalated to our water treatment contractor. Result: Investigation revealed a faulty mixing valve that could have created ideal conditions for legionella growth. Early detection prevented potential health risks for 80 building occupants and avoided costly remediation work.
