1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a challenging situation with young people

During a cover lesson with a Year 9 class of 30 students, three students became disruptive and refused to complete the set mathematics worksheet. I calmly approached their table and acknowledged their frustration with the topic. I offered to break down the first problem step-by-step, which engaged two of the students immediately. For the third student who remained defiant, I provided an alternative task that still met the lesson objectives while allowing them to save face. By the end of the 50-minute lesson, all students had completed meaningful work, and I reported the successful behaviour management strategy to the head of department, who praised the approach for maintaining classroom harmony.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to unexpected circumstances

I arrived at a secondary school expecting to cover an English lesson but discovered the regular teacher had left detailed science worksheets instead due to a last-minute timetable change. With 25 Year 8 students arriving in 5 minutes, I quickly reviewed the materials on photosynthesis. I restructured the lesson into a collaborative activity where students worked in groups of 4 to complete different sections, then presented their findings to the class. This approach allowed me to facilitate learning in an unfamiliar subject while keeping students engaged. The science department head later commented that students had retained the information better than in traditional lessons, leading to three more bookings that term.
