1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a challenging classroom situation

During a Year 9 Science cover lesson, I discovered the regular teacher had left minimal notes and the class was particularly restless due to a cancelled PE lesson. I quickly assessed the situation and adapted the worksheet-based lesson into an interactive discussion about real-world applications of the topic. I used the whiteboard to create a mind map with student contributions, which engaged all 28 students and turned potential disruption into productive learning. The class teacher later commented that students had retained more information than usual, and I received positive feedback from the head of department about my quick thinking and classroom management.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage disruptive behaviour from students you'd never met before

While covering a Year 8 English class, three students at the back were consistently talking and distracting others during a reading comprehension task. I calmly approached their table, acknowledged their energy positively, and redirected it by asking them to lead a group discussion about the text's themes. I gave them specific roles as discussion leaders for their table groups, which channelled their social nature constructively. The strategy worked immediately - they became engaged participants and helped other students contribute ideas. By the lesson's end, all groups had completed the comprehension questions, and the disruptive students thanked me for making the lesson interesting.
