1Question

Tell me about a time you had to quickly adapt to a new environment or situation

When I started supply work, I was placed at a challenging secondary school with 48 hours notice to cover Year 9 Science. The regular teacher was unexpectedly absent and left minimal lesson plans. I arrived early to familiarize myself with the classroom layout and available resources. I adapted the basic worksheet into an interactive group activity, dividing the 28 students into teams of 4. I established clear ground rules immediately and used positive reinforcement to maintain engagement. By the lesson's end, students had completed the required work and the head of department commented on how well-behaved and focused the class had been. This experience taught me the importance of preparation and flexibility in supply teaching.
2Question

Describe a challenging behaviour management situation and how you resolved it

During a Year 10 Maths lesson, two students began disrupting the class by talking loudly and refusing to engage with the work. I calmly approached their table and quietly reminded them of the classroom expectations I'd established at the start. When this didn't work, I moved one student to a different seat and gave them a specific task to complete within 10 minutes. I praised other students who were working well, which encouraged the disruptive students to refocus. I also made a note to speak with their regular teacher about effective strategies for these particular pupils. The lesson continued smoothly and both students completed their work. This taught me the value of remaining calm and using positive reinforcement alongside clear consequences.
