1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to show compassion to someone in a difficult situation

When working with an 82-year-old resident who had recently lost her husband, I noticed she was withdrawing from activities and barely eating. I spent extra time during my shifts sitting with her, listening to stories about her late husband and encouraging her to share memories. I also coordinated with the activities team to create a memory book featuring photos and stories she shared. Over 3 weeks, her mood improved significantly and she began participating in group activities again, even helping other new residents settle in.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate with someone who was upset or confused

A resident with early-stage dementia became agitated during dinner, insisting he needed to go home to feed his dog. Rather than correcting him, I acknowledged his concern and asked about his dog, learning it was a golden retriever named Max. I spent 10 minutes looking at photos on his phone and discussing Max's favourite walks. This calmed him completely, and he finished his meal peacefully. I documented this approach in his care plan so other staff could use the same technique, reducing his evening agitation by 80%.
