STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in your care

An 85-year-old resident with dementia became increasingly distressed during meal times, often refusing to eat. I noticed she responded well to gentle conversation about her late husband. I began sitting with her for 15 minutes before each meal, talking about her memories while encouraging small bites. Over 3 weeks, her food intake improved by 40% and she became more settled. The family thanked me for helping maintain her dignity while ensuring proper nutrition. This experience reinforced how compassionate communication can transform care outcomes.
2Question

How do you handle challenging behaviour from residents?

A resident with Alzheimer's frequently became agitated during personal care, sometimes becoming physically resistant. I observed that he was calmer in the mornings and responded well to familiar music from the 1960s. I adjusted his care schedule to morning slots and played his favourite songs during assistance. Within 2 weeks, care incidents reduced by 60% and he began cooperating with daily routines. I documented these preferences in his care plan so all staff could use the same approach, ensuring consistent positive outcomes.
