STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in your care

Situation: I was caring for an 82-year-old resident with dementia who became distressed every evening, repeatedly asking for her late husband. Task: I needed to comfort her while maintaining her dignity and emotional wellbeing. Action: Instead of correcting her, I sat with her for 30 minutes each evening, listening to her stories about her husband and validating her feelings. I created a memory box with photos and mementos that we could look through together. Result: Her evening distress reduced by 80% within two weeks, and her family commented on how much calmer and happier she seemed during visits.
2Question

Give an example of when you went above and beyond for someone you were caring for

Situation: A 76-year-old resident was feeling isolated as his family lived abroad and couldn't visit during lockdown. Task: I wanted to help maintain his connection with loved ones and boost his morale. Action: I arranged weekly video calls with his daughter in Australia, helped him write letters, and set up a small garden project where he could grow vegetables to share with other residents. I also organised a virtual birthday celebration with 12 family members joining online. Result: His mood improved dramatically, he became more social with other residents, and his family expressed gratitude for helping maintain their close relationship despite the distance.
