STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in your care

Situation: I was caring for an 82-year-old resident who had become withdrawn after her husband's death. Task: I needed to help her engage with daily activities and improve her wellbeing. Action: I spent extra one-to-one time listening to her stories about her late husband, encouraged her to share photos with other residents, and arranged for her favourite music to be played during meals. I also coordinated with her family to bring in familiar items from home. Result: Within 3 weeks, she began participating in group activities again and her appetite improved. Her daughter thanked me for helping her mother find joy again during a difficult time.
2Question

How do you handle working with residents who have dementia or confusion?

Situation: I regularly cared for residents with varying stages of dementia who sometimes became agitated or confused. Task: I needed to provide effective care while maintaining their dignity and reducing distress. Action: I learned each resident's personal history and triggers, used validation therapy techniques, and maintained consistent routines. When residents became confused, I would redirect their attention to familiar activities or topics rather than correcting them. I also ensured clear, simple communication and gave them plenty of time to process information. Result: Behavioural incidents in my section decreased by 40%, and families commented on how calm and content their loved ones seemed during visits.
