STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you provided exceptional one-to-one care to a resident

I cared for an 82-year-old resident with advanced dementia who became increasingly agitated during meal times. I spent 30 minutes each day sitting with her before meals, playing her favourite 1960s music and showing her old photographs. This routine reduced her mealtime anxiety by 80% and she began eating full meals again. The family was delighted when they visited and saw her calm and engaged. This experience taught me that personalised attention and understanding individual triggers makes all the difference in quality care.
2Question

How do you handle challenging behaviour from residents while maintaining dignity?

I encountered a 75-year-old gentleman who refused personal care and became verbally aggressive with staff. Instead of forcing the situation, I took time to understand his military background and discovered he responded well to structured routines. I approached him with respect, explained each step clearly, and gave him choices about timing. Within 2 weeks, he was cooperating fully with care tasks and even thanked me for treating him with dignity. This taught me that challenging behaviour often stems from fear or loss of control, and patience with personalised approaches works best.
