STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you showed compassion to someone in your care

An elderly resident with dementia was becoming distressed during mealtimes, often refusing food and becoming agitated. I noticed she responded well to gentle conversation about her past as a teacher. I began sitting with her during meals, discussing her teaching experiences and favourite students. This approach calmed her anxiety and she began eating regularly again. Over 3 weeks, her weight stabilised and family members commented on her improved mood. The situation taught me that taking time to understand each person's individual needs and history is essential for providing truly compassionate care.
2Question

Give an example of how you've built a meaningful relationship with someone you've cared for

I cared for an 82-year-old gentleman who was withdrawn and rarely engaged with activities. During personal care, I noticed photographs of vintage cars in his room and started conversations about his interest in mechanics. I discovered he had owned a garage for 40 years. I arranged for him to share his knowledge with other residents during activity sessions, and he became animated discussing engine repairs and classic models. Within 6 weeks, his participation in social activities increased dramatically and he began mentoring younger staff about problem-solving. This relationship showed me how connecting with someone's passions can transform their care experience.
