1Question

Tell me about a time when you showed compassion to someone in your care

An elderly resident was feeling particularly lonely after her family couldn't visit due to illness. I noticed she was withdrawn during meal times and barely engaging with activities. I made time to sit with her each afternoon for 30 minutes, listening to stories about her late husband and looking through photo albums together. Over two weeks, I saw her mood lift significantly - she started joining group activities again and even began helping newer residents settle in. Her daughter later thanked me, saying her mother had mentioned our chats during their phone calls and seemed much happier.
2Question

How do you handle working with residents who have dementia?

I worked with a gentleman with mid-stage dementia who became agitated during personal care routines. Rather than rushing, I learned his triggers and preferences by observing patterns over several weeks. I discovered he responded well to music from the 1960s and preferred male carers for certain tasks. I adapted my approach by playing his favourite songs during care, speaking slowly and clearly, and ensuring consistency in routine. This reduced his distress episodes by 75% and made care times more pleasant for everyone. I also shared these insights with the team to ensure consistent care across all shifts.
