STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to show compassion to someone in distress

When working at a residential home, I cared for Margaret, an 82-year-old resident with dementia who became extremely distressed each evening, calling for her late husband. Rather than simply redirecting her, I sat with Margaret for 30 minutes each evening, listening to her stories about her husband and validating her feelings. I created a memory box with photos and mementos that helped calm her anxiety. Within two weeks, Margaret's evening distress episodes reduced by 80%, and she began looking forward to our daily conversations. The family expressed gratitude for the personalised approach that honoured Margaret's emotional needs while providing practical comfort.
2Question

Give an example of when you went above and beyond for someone in your care

I noticed that Robert, a 78-year-old resident, had stopped eating properly and seemed withdrawn after his daughter's visits became less frequent due to work commitments. Recognising his loneliness, I arranged for Robert to help me with simple tasks like folding laundry, which gave him purpose and regular interaction. I also coordinated with his daughter to set up weekly video calls during my shifts. Over six weeks, Robert's appetite improved dramatically, he gained 4 pounds, and his mood lifted significantly. His daughter was amazed by the transformation and thanked me for treating her father with such individual attention and care.
