STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in distress

An elderly resident with dementia became very distressed during dinner, repeatedly asking for her deceased husband. Rather than correcting her, I sat with her and listened to her memories about their 50-year marriage. I validated her feelings and gently redirected her attention to her favourite meal. Within 15 minutes, she was calm and eating well. The family later thanked me for treating their mother with such dignity during a difficult moment.
2Question

How do you handle challenging behaviour from residents?

A resident with dementia often became agitated during personal care, sometimes becoming physically resistant. I learned his routine preferences and discovered he was calmer in the afternoons. I adjusted his care schedule and used his favourite music during personal care. I also identified that he responded well to male carers, so I coordinated with my colleague. These changes reduced his distressed episodes from daily occurrences to just twice weekly.
