1Question

Tell me about a time you adapted your teaching approach for a struggling Year 1 pupil

I had a Year 1 pupil who was struggling with phonics and falling behind in reading. I identified through assessment that he was a kinaesthetic learner who needed movement to engage. I adapted my approach by introducing letter formation in sand trays, phonics hopscotch games, and movement-based blending activities. I also provided additional 15-minute daily interventions using multi-sensory resources. Within 6 weeks, his phonics knowledge improved from Phase 2 to Phase 4 level, and his confidence in reading group activities increased significantly. This experience reinforced the importance of understanding individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods accordingly.
2Question

Describe how you handle challenging behaviour in young children

I had a Year 1 child who frequently disrupted carpet time by calling out and moving around the classroom. I implemented a consistent approach using positive behaviour strategies. First, I established clear visual expectations with a behaviour chart and gave him specific jobs like being the register monitor to channel his energy positively. I used proximity praise, acknowledging good behaviour from children sitting near him. When disruption occurred, I used calm, quiet redirection rather than public correction. I also implemented a reward system where he earned golden time for following carpet rules. Within 3 weeks, his calling out reduced by 80% and he became a positive role model for other children during whole-class activities.
