Dear Hiring Manager,

Penguin Recruitment's Water Treatment Engineer vacancy aligns directly with my expertise in ACOP L8 compliance and closed system analysis — two areas central to this role. With over five years delivering water hygiene services across commercial and industrial sites, I have hands-on experience in calorifier pasteurisation, TMV testing, dead leg removal, and cooling tower chlorination, consistently working within regulatory guidelines.

My background in water treatment has taken me across multiple sites nationwide, managing temperature monitoring programmes, conducting tank inspections, and carrying out closed system dosing and remediation. I hold a full clean UK driving licence and am accustomed to flexible scheduling, including overtime when operational demands require it.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a significant Legionella risk on site — what did you do and what was the outcome?

Situation: During a routine temperature monitoring visit at a large hotel in Leeds, I recorded cold water temperatures of 24°C at three sentinel outlets — well above the 20°C ACOP L8 threshold. Task: I needed to assess the full system, report findings, and implement remediation without disrupting hotel operations. Action: I carried out a full closed system flush, increased cold water turnover by adjusting the storage configuration, and recommended immediate dead leg removal on two redundant pipework sections. I documented everything in a detailed risk report submitted to the client and their responsible person within 24 hours. Result: Follow-up sampling two weeks later confirmed temperatures had dropped to 17°C across all outlets, and the client's annual Legionella risk assessment was subsequently downgraded from high to low risk.
2Question

Give an example of when you had to work overtime or at short notice to complete a critical water treatment task.

Situation: A care home in Manchester contacted our team on a Friday afternoon after a routine inspection flagged elevated Legionella counts in a calorifier. Task: The site required emergency pasteurisation and disinfection before residents used the hot water system the following morning. Action: I drove to site within two hours, completed a full calorifier pasteurisation cycle holding 70°C for one hour, then flushed all hot water outlets systematically. I also took post-disinfection water samples and left written instructions for the facilities manager. Result: Laboratory results returned clear within 48 hours, the care home avoided a CQC compliance notice, and the client retained our company for their ongoing water hygiene contract worth approximately £9,600 per year.
