Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV with a Personal Statement that explicitly names 'Used Car Sales Controller' and references FCA compliance experience, as the advert lists compliance as a core responsibility.

2

📊 Quantify your sales achievements: e.g. 'Increased finance penetration from 42% to 67% across a 12-car-per-month used car operation, contributing £18k additional monthly profit.'

3

🎯 Dedicate a bullet point to KPI management — the advert specifically calls out conversion rates and team performance monitoring, so cite the metrics you tracked and improved.

4

🏆 Highlight any Business Manager or Sales Controller title held within a franchised dealership, as the advert treats this as a direct match and prioritises franchised experience.

5

🤝 Include a brief section on coaching and team leadership outcomes (e.g. 'Mentored 4 sales executives, reducing average deal-to-close time by 2 days'), as motivating the sales team is listed as the first core responsibility.

Dear Hiring Manager,

The Used Car Sales Controller position at The Solution Auto's Basingstoke dealership is precisely the step I have been working towards. With a solid background in FCA-compliant deal management and finance penetration, I understand what it takes to drive both volume and profitability in a franchised environment — two priorities your advert places front and centre.

My background in franchised motor retail has seen me support and coach sales teams to consistently hit monthly targets, monitor conversion rates across the full used car pipeline, and manage stock pricing to maintain healthy margin. I have worked closely with Business Managers to structure deals that maximise F&I product attachment while fully adhering to Consumer Duty obligations, achieving finance penetration rates above 60% across a 15-unit-per-month used car operation.

1Question

Tell me about a time you turned around an underperforming sales team — what steps did you take and what was the outcome?

Situation: When I joined my previous dealership, the used car team of 4 executives had missed target for 3 consecutive months, with a conversion rate of just 18%. Task: I was asked to identify the root causes and implement a recovery plan within 60 days. Action: I introduced daily 10-minute stand-ups to review pipeline, ran individual deal-coaching sessions each Friday, and restructured the handover process between sales and the Business Manager to reduce drop-offs at the finance stage. I also introduced a simple CRM follow-up cadence for unsold customers. Result: Within 8 weeks, conversion improved to 27% and the team hit 104% of their monthly volume target for the first time that year, adding approximately £14,000 in additional gross profit.
2Question

Give an example of when you identified a compliance risk in the sales process and how you resolved it.

Situation: During a routine review of deal files at my dealership, I noticed that 3 out of 10 sampled finance proposals lacked adequate needs-and-circumstances documentation, which posed a clear FCA Consumer Duty risk. Task: I needed to address the gap immediately without disrupting the sales floor or triggering a formal regulatory review. Action: I paused the affected deals, briefed the sales team in a 30-minute workshop on the correct documentation requirements, and created a one-page deal checklist pinned at every desk. I also introduced a weekly spot-check of 5 random deal files. Result: The next internal audit 6 weeks later found zero documentation gaps across all 20 sampled files, and the process has been adopted across two other sites in the group.
