Business Development Manager

Automotive 1st tier

West Midlands | £90,000 – £110,000 + Bonus & Benefits | Permanent

Our client is a market-leading, award-winning global manufacturer of safety-critical assemblies, operating across the OEM, automotive, motorsport, defence and specialist vehicle sectors. With manufacturing and distribution operations in both the UK and USA, they are a trusted name in their field and are now looking to strengthen their commercial team with the appointment of an experienced Business Development Manager.

The Role

This is a varied, outward-facing position in which you will proactively identify and develop new business opportunities across existing, lapsed and prospective customers. You will take ownership of a portfolio of UK and European accounts, building strong working relationships at all levels within the OEM through regular face-to-face engagement. Internally, you will work closely with colleagues across Purchasing, Engineering, Quality, Logistics and Materials Control to ensure consistent customer satisfaction and effective account management.

The Person

We are looking for a graduate-calibre candidate, ideally in Engineering or Business, with at least three years of experience in key account management or new business development within automotive, aerospace or a related sector. Experience of engineered components is highly desirable, particularly within areas such as engine, powertrain, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, steering, cooling, exhaust, fuel or braking systems.

The role involves extensive UK and European travel. As the manufacturing facility is based in the West Midlands, candidates within approximately one hour's commute of Birmingham are preferred.

The Package

Base salary of £90,000 to £110,000, plus bonus and benefits. If you are currently earning above this range, please do not let salary be a barrier to an initial conversation. Our client is committed to securing the right person.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build relationships with multiple stakeholders across different departments

When managing a £1.2M contract with a major OEM customer, I discovered quality issues were causing delivery delays. I organised weekly meetings bringing together our Engineering, Quality, and Logistics teams with the customer's procurement and technical teams. I facilitated discussions between 8 stakeholders across both organisations, ensuring clear communication channels. By establishing joint problem-solving sessions, we identified the root cause within 3 weeks and implemented corrective measures. This collaborative approach not only resolved the immediate issue but strengthened our partnership, leading to a 25% contract extension worth £300K additional revenue.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to travel extensively to maintain client relationships

During a critical 6-month period, I managed relationships with 5 key OEM customers across Germany, France, and the UK while launching new powertrain components. I spent 3 days per week travelling, conducting 32 face-to-face meetings to address technical concerns and negotiate contract terms. I developed a structured visit schedule, combining customer meetings with local supplier audits to maximise efficiency. Despite the demanding travel schedule, I maintained regular communication through weekly video calls and monthly progress reports. This intensive relationship management resulted in securing £1.8M in new contracts and achieving 100% customer satisfaction scores across all accounts.
