Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to build rapport with a child who was initially reluctant to engage

During my volunteer work at a local youth centre, I encountered an 8-year-old who refused to participate in group activities and sat alone during craft sessions. I observed that he was interested in football, so I started casual conversations about his favourite team during break times. Over 3 weeks, I gradually introduced football-themed learning activities, like counting goals and reading player names. By the end of the month, he was actively participating in all group activities and even helping other children. This taught me the importance of finding individual interests to build connections and encourage engagement.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain patient and positive despite challenging behaviour

While helping at an after-school club, I worked with a 7-year-old who frequently disrupted activities by shouting and throwing materials when frustrated with tasks. Instead of reacting negatively, I maintained a calm tone and implemented a simple traffic light system - green for good focus, amber for needing a break, red for time out. I consistently praised his green moments and gave him responsibility as the 'materials monitor' which channelled his energy positively. Within 6 weeks, his disruptive incidents decreased from daily occurrences to just twice per week, and his confidence in completing tasks improved significantly.
