1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to build rapport with a child who was initially reluctant to engage

When I started volunteering at a local youth club, there was an 8-year-old boy who would sit alone and refuse to join activities. I noticed he was interested in football, so I spent 10 minutes each session just talking about his favourite team, Manchester United. After 3 weeks, I suggested we practice penalties together during free time. This breakthrough moment led to him gradually joining group activities. By the end of the 8-week programme, he was actively participating in team games and had made 4 new friends. The key was finding his interest and building trust slowly rather than forcing participation.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm and patient with a challenging behaviour

During my work at an after-school club, a 7-year-old girl became very upset when she couldn't complete a craft activity, throwing materials and shouting. Instead of raising my voice, I calmly sat beside her and acknowledged her frustration. I gave her 5 minutes to calm down whilst I tidied the scattered materials. Then I broke the task into 3 smaller steps and offered to help with the first one. She completed the craft successfully and later apologised. This taught me that patience and breaking down challenges into manageable pieces helps children overcome frustration and builds their confidence.
