1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a SEND pupil achieve a breakthrough

I was working with Jake, a Year 7 pupil with severe autism who hadn't spoken in school for 18 months. His anxiety around communication was preventing any academic progress. I introduced a visual communication board system combined with his special interest in trains. Within 3 weeks, Jake was using picture symbols to request activities. By half-term, he was verbalising single words during train-themed maths lessons. The breakthrough came when he spontaneously said 'more trains please' during a geography lesson. His confidence grew dramatically, and by year-end he was participating in group discussions about transport systems, achieving his first Level 2 in speaking and listening.
2Question

Describe a challenging behaviour situation and how you managed it

I had a Year 9 pupil with SEMH needs who was having daily meltdowns, often throwing chairs and disrupting the whole class of 8 students. I analysed the triggers and noticed they occurred 15 minutes before break time when noise levels increased. I implemented a traffic light system where the pupil could request 'amber time' in our quiet corner when feeling overwhelmed. I also introduced movement breaks every 20 minutes. Within 2 weeks, incidents dropped from daily to twice weekly. After a month, the pupil was self-regulating effectively and helping other students recognise their own warning signs, creating a calmer environment for everyone.
