1Question

Tell me about a time you had to remain calm in a challenging classroom situation

During a Level 2 English lesson, one of my pupils with complex autism became overwhelmed by sensory input and began displaying challenging behaviour, throwing classroom materials and becoming distressed. I immediately recognised the signs of sensory overload and calmly implemented our agreed sensory break protocol. I guided the pupil to our designated quiet corner, dimmed the lights, and used their preferred tactile resources while speaking in a low, reassuring tone. Within 8 minutes, the pupil had regulated and was able to rejoin the group activity. I then reviewed the lesson plan with my teaching assistant to identify triggers and adjusted our sensory supports, preventing similar incidents for the remainder of the term.
2Question

Describe how you've collaborated with external professionals to support a pupil's needs

I worked closely with a speech and language therapist to support a Year 9 pupil with PMLD who had limited verbal communication. The therapist recommended implementing a PECS system alongside Makaton signing to increase communication opportunities. Over 6 weeks, we held weekly planning meetings where I shared classroom observations and the therapist provided targeted strategies. I adapted my lesson delivery to incorporate visual symbols and created consistent communication opportunities throughout the day. The collaboration resulted in the pupil independently requesting 12 different items using PECS within 3 months, significantly improving their classroom engagement and reducing frustration-related behaviours.
