1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a student through a challenging behavioural episode

A Year 9 student with autism became overwhelmed during a science lesson, throwing equipment and shouting. I immediately implemented our trauma-informed de-escalation protocol, speaking calmly and giving him space while ensuring other students' safety. I recognised his sensory overload triggers and guided him to our quiet room. After 15 minutes, I used his preferred visual communication cards to help him express his frustration about unexpected lesson changes. We developed a personalised transition strategy, and similar incidents reduced by 75% over the following month.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to meet an individual student's needs

During a history lesson, I noticed a student with learning difficulties struggling with the written worksheet despite previous success. I quickly realised she was having a difficult morning due to medication changes. I immediately switched to her preferred kinaesthetic learning approach, creating a timeline activity using physical cards and movement. Within 20 minutes, she was actively participating and completed 80% of the learning objectives. I documented this adaptation for her EHCP review, leading to updated teaching strategies across all subjects.
