STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a student's changing needs

A 14-year-old student with PMLD suddenly became distressed during sensory activities after a medication change. I immediately recognised the signs and adapted by creating a quieter workspace with dimmed lighting and familiar tactile materials. I collaborated with the occupational therapist to modify the sensory diet and introduced calming techniques. Within 3 days, the student was re-engaging with activities, and we established new protocols that prevented future episodes, maintaining their learning progress throughout the transition period.
2Question

Describe a challenging behaviour situation and how you handled it

An 11-year-old student with ASC began exhibiting aggressive behaviours during transitions, affecting 6 other pupils in the class. I analysed the triggers and implemented a visual transition schedule with 5-minute warnings and a designated calm space. I worked with the behaviour specialist to create a personalised de-escalation plan and trained 3 support staff in the techniques. Over 8 weeks, aggressive incidents reduced by 75%, and the student successfully transitioned independently, improving the learning environment for the entire class.
