1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to support a teacher with a challenging practical experiment

During a Year 10 chemistry lesson on acid-base reactions, the teacher needed to demonstrate titration but the burettes were malfunctioning. I quickly identified the issue was with the stopcock mechanisms and sourced replacement equipment from our backup laboratory. I also prepared additional indicator solutions and set up 6 workstations in 15 minutes. The lesson proceeded smoothly, and 28 students successfully completed their practical work. The teacher praised my quick thinking, and we implemented a weekly equipment check system to prevent similar issues.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a health and safety concern in the laboratory

While preparing for a Year 12 biology practical on enzyme activity, I noticed the water bath thermostats were reading inconsistent temperatures, with one showing 45°C when set to 37°C. This could have affected experimental results and potentially caused burns. I immediately removed the faulty equipment, tested all 4 water baths, and arranged for maintenance. I prepared alternative heating methods using Bunsen burners and beakers for the lesson. The faulty thermostat was replaced within 2 days, and I created a monthly calibration checklist for all temperature-controlled equipment.
