STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to manage multiple laboratory preparations simultaneously

During exam season, I needed to prepare 6 different Biology practicals across 3 year groups within 2 days. I created a detailed timeline mapping each preparation against available lab space and equipment. I started with the most complex enzyme practical requiring 24-hour incubation, then prepared microscopy slides and chemical solutions in parallel. By prioritising tasks requiring longest setup time first, I completed all preparations 30 minutes ahead of schedule, ensuring smooth practical delivery for 180 students across the exam period.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safety hazard and how you addressed it

While preparing for a Year 12 respiration practical, I noticed a gas tap connection was loose and could potentially leak during the lesson. I immediately isolated the gas supply and placed warning signs around the workstation. I contacted the site manager to arrange emergency repair and quickly reorganised the practical to use alternative equipment at 4 other workstations. The repair was completed within 2 hours, and I conducted a full safety check before the afternoon lesson. This proactive approach prevented potential gas exposure to 28 A-level students.
