1Question

Tell me about a time you had to support a teacher during a challenging practical lesson

During a Year 10 chemistry lesson on acid-base reactions, the teacher discovered that 3 of the 8 pH meters weren't working just before the practical began. I quickly assessed our backup equipment and found 2 spare digital pH meters in storage. I rapidly calibrated them using buffer solutions while the teacher explained the theory to students. I then demonstrated proper pH meter technique to 4 student groups, ensuring all 30 students could complete their titration experiments successfully. The lesson finished on time with accurate results, and the teacher praised my quick thinking and technical knowledge.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safety issue in the laboratory

While preparing for a Year 9 biology practical on enzyme activity, I noticed that the water bath temperature probe was giving inconsistent readings, fluctuating between 35°C and 45°C instead of maintaining steady 37°C. I immediately stopped the setup and tested the probe with a calibrated thermometer, confirming it was faulty. I replaced it with a backup probe and recalibrated the entire system, then created a fault report for the technician log. This prevented 28 students from using unreliable equipment that could have compromised their enzyme experiment results and potentially caused overheating injuries.
