STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to support a teacher during a challenging practical lesson

During a Year 10 chemistry lesson on metal reactions, the teacher discovered that half the magnesium strips were corroded just before the practical began. I quickly assessed our stock and found alternative zinc strips, then rapidly prepared new equipment sets for 28 students. I briefed the teacher on the adjusted procedure and supported students who were confused by the change. The lesson proceeded smoothly, students achieved their learning objectives, and the teacher commended my quick thinking and adaptability in maintaining the practical focus of the lesson.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safety issue in the laboratory and how you handled it

While preparing for a Year 9 practical on acids, I noticed that several safety goggles had cracked lenses and loose straps. Rather than risk student safety, I immediately removed the damaged equipment and sourced replacements from our backup stock. I then implemented a weekly safety equipment check system, logging condition and replacing items proactively. This prevented potential eye injuries and ensured 100% compliance during subsequent safety inspections. The head of science adopted my checking system across all three laboratory spaces.
