STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult supplier relationship

During a summer festival event for 200 residents, our catering supplier informed us 48 hours before that they couldn't deliver due to staff shortages. I immediately contacted three alternative caterers, negotiating emergency rates while maintaining our £3,500 budget. I secured a replacement who could provide the same menu quality, even arranging a tasting session for resident committee approval. The event proceeded successfully with 96% satisfaction scores, and I established backup supplier relationships for future contingencies.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to exceed resident expectations with limited budget

For our winter celebration with only £1,200 budget for 150 residents, I partnered with local businesses to sponsor decorations and entertainment in exchange for promotional opportunities. I negotiated with a local bakery to provide desserts at cost price and arranged for residents' children to perform entertainment. The collaborative approach created a more personal atmosphere, achieved 98% satisfaction scores, and established ongoing community partnerships that benefited future events while staying £200 under budget.
