STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to pitch a creative concept that was initially rejected by a client

When pitching an immersive retail activation for a luxury fashion brand, my initial concept featuring interactive digital mirrors was rejected as too tech-heavy. I listened to their concerns about brand authenticity and redesigned the concept around tactile fabric installations with subtle lighting effects. I presented detailed storyboards showing how customers would engage with different textures while maintaining the premium brand experience. The revised pitch was approved within 48 hours, and the activation generated 300% more social media engagement than their previous campaigns, leading to a £85k contract extension.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance creative vision with budget constraints

While developing a brand activation for a tech startup with a £25k budget, my original concept required custom LED installations costing £18k alone. I maintained the core creative vision by partnering with a specialist supplier who provided modular LED panels at 60% of the original cost. I redesigned the layout to use fewer but more impactful installations, and sourced sustainable materials for other elements. The final activation stayed within budget at £24.2k, achieved the same visual impact, and won a regional design award, demonstrating that creative constraints can drive innovation.
