STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built positive relationships with challenging pupils

In my previous Year 4 role, I had a pupil who frequently disrupted lessons and struggled with peer relationships. I implemented a personalised behaviour chart system and spent 10 minutes each morning discussing his daily goals. I also paired him with a responsible classmate for group activities. Within 3 weeks, his disruptive incidents decreased from daily occurrences to just twice weekly, and his reading confidence improved significantly as he began participating more actively in class discussions.
2Question

Describe how you've collaborated effectively with a teaching partner

When working with my Year 4 parallel teacher, we established weekly 90-minute planning sessions during PPA time to align our approaches. We divided curriculum areas between us - I took lead on maths planning while she focused on English, then we shared resources and adapted for our respective classes. This collaboration resulted in consistent pupil outcomes across both classes, with 85% of pupils meeting expected progress targets by the end of term, compared to 72% the previous year.
