STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a difficult client relationship.

A high net worth client was frustrated after receiving an unexpected £45k CGT bill following a property disposal. The situation arose because their previous advisor hadn't considered principal private residence relief properly. I immediately arranged a face-to-face meeting to review their entire portfolio. I discovered we could claim entrepreneurs' relief on a separate business disposal, reducing their overall liability by £38k. I also implemented quarterly review meetings to prevent future surprises. The client not only stayed but referred three new clients worth £2.1M in combined assets within six months.
2Question

Describe how you've coached junior team members in your previous role.

I mentored a newly qualified ATT colleague who was struggling with complex trust tax returns. I created a structured 8-week development plan covering technical knowledge and client communication skills. We worked through 15 live cases together, with me gradually reducing my involvement from full review to spot checks. I arranged for them to shadow client meetings and encouraged questions during our weekly one-to-ones. By month three, they were independently managing 25 trust clients and achieved a 94% accuracy rate on their returns, compared to 78% when they started.
